For a few months, we asked a “question of the month” in our monthly eLetters. We wanted to share all of the responses we got. Thanks to the brothers who answered these questions! There are some real gems and great memories here. We hope you get a kick out of these answers as we did.

What was the best thing the house cook made during your time at Lambda Chi?

  • Bear meat
  • I doubt it was the best thing the cook made, but the dish I remember was called “city chicken.” It looked like a chicken drumstick but was actually veal wrapped around a little stick, then breaded and deep-fried. Chicken was an expensive luxury then, while veal was cheap. Nowadays it’s the other way round. -David Lightner, Z642, ’63
  • Barbeque ham for lunch.

Tell us which restaurant or bar in State College was your favorite! Which story comes to mind when you think of this place?

  • Would probably have to be the Rathskeller and Rock Ponies! I don’t remember many stories it was just the place to meet up with alumni, brothers, and friends and put down a case or 5, lol.
  • The restaurant: New College Diner
The story: Very late one Friday night (meaning around 2:00 am Saturday) in 1962 or thereabouts, three of us decided on the spur of the moment to pile into Austin Taggart’s old car and go see the Mona Lisa, currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. We never did see the famous painting, as the lineup stretched for blocks outside the Met, but we had a good time hitting half the bars in Manhattan, and then drove back to State College, arriving Sunday morning.
So why did thinking of the New College Diner remind me of this story? Well, there were no bank machines or credit cards back then, so we could not have made the trip had we not persuaded the manager of the New College Diner (open 24 hours, always) to cash a check for us.

What were some of the best nicknames you called your brothers, and how did those nicknames come about?

  • Turkey Neck…..just look at the 1982 Composite and it will become obvious:)

Who was your best friend during your first year with the chapter?

  • Frederick Basil Hollick

What was the top social event at the house the year you graduated?

  • The Pig Roast
  • Jammy with Leroy Taylor!!!! Mirror image of Otis Day on the Knights from animal house
  • A combine and social beach party that included 1 other Fraternity and 2 sororities and their guests and tons of sand in the chapter room in the basement.
